Abstract
The Word Watcher is an application designed to support language education in secondary schools. By making pupils look at foreign languages form a different language than they are used to, The Word Watcher aims to raise the pupils' interest in learning foreign languages.
The application visualizes of the languages English, French, German and Dutch, and therefore gives an insight in the overlap and differences of those languages. When the user types in a sentence, the program can conclude in which language it has been written, based on the different units that occur. The user is challenged to find sentences that cannot be recognized and develops a basic understanding of the spelling in the different languages.
The active role of the user has been one of the focus points in developing the concept.
