Abstract
DEAF is an interdisciplinary biennale in the field of art, technology and society. DEAF presents, and reflects on the current state of affairs in electronic art and serves as a forum for critical discussions that explore and develop relationships between art disciplines and science. In its past twelve editions DEAF (called Manifestation for Unstable Media prior to 1994) has earned itself an international reputation.
DEAF will offer many activities, such as: an exhibition of interactive works of art, Internet projects, project presentations, an international Art Academy Day, full evening’s programs by guest curators, live performances and concerts, seminars, workshops, a publication and a scientific symposium. All program elements are thematically linked by DEAF03’s theme Data Knitting. Many institutes, both large and small, participate in DEAF, either in collaboration or by presenting an independent program section. DEAF03 Data Knitting will focus on the conditions of the information and knowledge based society and the role of the media therein. It specifically explores the ways in which information is gathered, ordered and made accessible through databases and archives. The role of interactivity as a means of manipulating, transforming and individually shaping (media) realities is an important factor in putting together the program.
