Abstract

We are used to opening a book to read a text. The "Virtual Book" browses not only page for page, but also finds text passages linked to particular search words. As an example of this, the printed publication “Digitale Transformationen” is introducing a first version of this digital book format.
The text is digitally processed as a knowledge-structure. By means of text analysis, essential keywords are identified: the 250 most common nouns serve the reader as a navigational framework. If a word is chosen, the "Virtual Book" turns its own pages, and shows the relevant place in the text. The reader can leaf through the "Virtual Book", browse, watch videos and listen to music. The classical book format, with its linear chapter structure is combined with the hypertext principle of networked information. The book as haptic interface is now made available using multi-media over and above the actual text.
