Abstract

The installation "Media flow: netzspannung.org" is an all-encompassing browser, which, in a simple to use way, makes the archive of the Internet platform netzspannung.org accessible. Two parallel media flows, one made up of images, and one of words, flow as large format data projections through the space.

The word flow shows keywords, authors and title of the archived documents. A visual access point made up of images, which represent the archived documents, complements this text-based point of entry. Using an integrated text-to-speech-module, the terms are spoken out by a computer voice. They build, alongside the representation of text and image – an acoustic description of the archive. The media flow, and the image based acoustic spheres, create the impression of a media space.

The interface object, an archive table with two monitors, allows access to an extensive data flow. Concepts within the media flow, listed alphabetically on a touch-screen, serve the user as an interface in which choices can be made. With the choice of a word, it is pulled out of the flow and is surrounded by a word-ring of terms, which shows the contextual relationships of the database entries. With the choice of a picture, the title and names of the author of the selected document are shown, complemented by links to further documents by the author. At the same time, detailed information relating to the selected terms appears as HTML, PDF or video documents on a third screen.

This synopsis of overview, context and detail, allows an all-embracing navigation through the archive. It combines the usual access via keywords with the new approach of an associative network of terms combined with visual search possibilities.
