Abstract
The interactive representation of multi-media information and the communication of the users with virtual agents require the exploration of new forms of communication and the development of multi-modal man-machine interfaces.
“Portal” is synonym for “access to resources and services on the Internet”.
The project SoNG focuses on the development of building blocks for the next generation of portals that represent information as three-dimensional environments capable of communicating as virtual humans, so-called avatars, with users.
The SoNG project developed the prototype of a MPEG-4 -based multi-user environment that is capable of providing access to information in the form of multi-media presentation and interaction. With the PointScreen technology, the Research Group MARS has developed a Mixed Reality-interface for space- and time-based media representation.
Through new tracking systems Mixed Reality interface technology can be applied in public spaces, for instance as intelligent showcases in which users communicate through gesture- and speech-based 1:1-communication with virtual avatars. User can access an information space on the Internet with an ordinary personal communication tool such as a cellular phone.
