Long before now ever present notions of the "performativity" of theatre have spread from philosophy into theatre academias, the notion of the "ephemeral" character of theatre has fascinated and disturbed academics and practitioners alike. Romantic ravings about the uniqueness of the individual live theatre performance, producers and directors despair at the essentially unsatisfying results of trying to capture the live experience on audio or visual tape, were all concentrated on the entirety of the evening and thus on the entire ensemble - the bodies and voices of the performers, the orchestra, the conductor, the stage workers and, last but not least, - the audience's perception of it all.
