KurzdarstellungKurzbeschreibungArt and the free Play with rule-governed Play Why are game and playing so important in the field of media and cultural theory nowadays? Following Adamowsky (2000: 18), it is the concept of play that can best describe our society and the impact of new technologies on our culture, especially as digital media offer us new spaces for playing. However, these are different concepts of play we are discussing in game studies and in general cultural sciences. The travelling of concepts from one area to another seems to be questionable. In literature and art the metaphor of the free game is the kernel of the concept play, in computer games it is the rule-governed concept of play that is central, and not a metaphorical use of the term. A tension between and an interplay of both concepts can be observed when we have a look at works of art that use computer games as their topic or as their material. KünstlerInnen / AutorInnen
