Abstract

Interactive, bio-sensory installation. Using EEG measurements, a link is established between the brain activity of two participants and the energy household of a robot colony.
Terrain 02 is an interactive bio-sensory installation. Two participants take a seat on a chair and put on a headband fitted with EEG sensors. On a platform between them are approximately twenty beetle-like robots. The inner state of the participants, measured by their brain activity, influences the behaviour of the robot colony. The small robots are solar driven, mobile and fitted with simple sensors that react to light. The round platform where they are situated is supplied with light from the ceiling of the room. This changes according to the measured brain activity of the participants. Thus, communication can take place between the two people based on brain activity. The more similar the frequencies of the two participants are, the more homogeneous the movements of the robot colony gets. Interaction takes place between different levels of reality ? between the behaviour of the robots, their light source and the inner state of the observers. Terrain02 is a further development of terrain01 (1994) where only one person took part.
