Abstract

The interactive installation »Liquid Views« explores the artistic potential of the digital video image with the help of a sensory interface. A monitor equipped with a touchscreen shows a simulation of the surface of some water. Wave movements are generated algorithmically, and the movements are accompanied by soft water noises. The monitor is set up with the screen facing upwards and confronts the observer leaning over it with its digital image. Thus, a water surface is simulated in which the observer appears to be mirrored. This is done by digitising a live video recording of the observer. If the realistic appearance of the liquid draws the observer to touch the surface then the image blurs like real water. Artificial Waves generated by real-time morphing change the mirror image.
A large projection surface forms another part of the installation. The massively enlarged virtually mirrored face of the participant looks out from here into the room and at the people standing around watching. The introversion of looking at oneself is thus converted into looking at other people.
