Abstract

Robert Adrian X is an artist born in Toronto, living in Vienna since 1972. He is working with many different media including painting, sculpture, model-making, installation, photography, radio, computer and, since 1979, with the theory and praxis of art & telecommunications.

Biography

Artists working in the global space of telecommunications networks have always been faced with the dilemma that, on the one hand, the rapid mutation and/or obsolescence of the technology of production and distribution makes the life-span of telecomm-based works very short and, on the other hand, that telecomm-based work is usually unrecognisable as art until after the technology on which it is based has mutated and/or disappeared.
Robert Adrian’s talk addresses this problem with some examples of early (pre-internet) projects using fax, slow-scan TV, amateur (ham) radio and computer conferencing.
