Monika Fleischmann is a german research artist and scientist, scenographer and curator. She is a Professor of Media Art & Media Theory at Fraunhofer IAIS and the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen.

Biography

* 1950 in Karlsruhe. Monika Fleischmann is a trained fashion designer, scenographer, play, drama and art teacher. She studied fine arts, aesthetic education & visual communication at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Since 1987 she has been founder and director of research labs in Media Art, Interface Design & eCulture. Awarded as a pioneer of media art at Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, she produced since fundamental works
of interactive art, such as "Berlin - Cyber City", "Home of the Brain", "Liquid Views", Rigid Waves", "Virtual Balance"; "Murmuring Fields", "Energy Passages" or "Media Flow" in partnership with research architect
Wolfgang Strauss. Award-winning projects such as the eTeaching Platform and the "netzspannung.org" archive for Media Art or the patented bio-sensory interface "PointScreen" for gestural interaction, the "semantic map" or the "interactive poster" are among the "100 Products of the Future" categorized as "groundbreaking ideas that will change our lives" (T.W.Hänsch 2007).
In the 1980s, Fleischmann was co-founder of Art + Com in Berlin, one of the first research institutes for art and technology in Germany. With the MARS Exploratory Media Lab, Fleischmann has established one of the internationally recognized laboratories for media art and technology. From 2005-2007 she managed the "eCulture Factory" at the Fraunhofer IAIS in Bremen. In 2008 she was appointed honorary professor of media theory and interactive media art by the University of Applied Sciences in Bremen.
