Biography

Prof. Wolfgang Strauss is an architect, media artist and scenographer. He studied and taught architecture at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Honored at Ars Electronica as a pioneer of media art, since 1987 he has — in partnership with Monika Fleischmann — produced groundbreaking works of interactive art, such as Berlin Cyber City, Liquid Views, Energy-Passages. As a professor of media arts (Saarbrücken / Kassel), he developed with students a new format of interactive drama in a virtual television studio.
In the 1980’s Strauss co-founded Art + Com in Berlin, one of the first research laboratories for art and technology in Germany. Since 1997 he has headed artistic and scientific research in human-computer interaction at the Fraunhofer MARS Exploratory Media Lab. Innovative projects such as the media art archive netzspannung.org or the bio-sensory PointScreen Interface for interaction without touch have been created there. Strauss understands Human Computer Interaction (HCI) as interactive staging of an expression of content, form and narrative with digital means: the interface as an evocative information object and interaction as a process of thinking.

The work of Wolfgang Strauss is exhibited and presented internationally in places such as MOMA New York, ICC Tokyo, Centre Pompidou Paris, American Film Institute Los Angeles, Itau Cultural Sao Paulo, eCulture Fair Amsterdam, ZKM Karlsruhe, Sevilla Biennale and Ars Electronica Linz. He has published more than 100 scientific papers, artistic essays and theoretical articles, and received 22 awards – among them the Golden Nica for Interactive Art at Ars Electronica. Guest professorships, fellowships, lectures and talks.

Since 2009 he is a Visiting Professor for Experimental Interaction in the interdisciplinary HCI Master’s Programme of FB 5 Wirtschaftsinformatik und Neue Medien at University Siegen.

Works / Projects

Models and prototypes to illustrate the world! The artistic & scientific works of Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss arise from experimental research. Art as research combines explicit and implicit knowledge, audio-visual experience and knowledge on perception and the senses. Since 1987 Fleischmann & Strauss experiment with interactivity and new media. They create artistic works, research prototypes, tools, interfaces and events intersecting art, science and technology. They establish art & science institutions such as ArtWork (1987), Art+Com (1988) and La Première Rue (1989). In 1992/93 they are research fellows at KHM and research artists at GMD since then. In 1997 they start the Media |Arts |Research |Studies Department at GMD/Fraunhofer IMK/IAIS. Until 2008 the MARS - Exploratory Media Lab was 100% financed by 3rd party funding (10 Mio €) raised by intensive funding strategies. In 2009 the ZKM-Center for Art & Technology in Karlsruhe will host their Media Art Research and Education platform netzspannung.org (video) amongst other installations of Fleischmann & Strauss.
