Abstract

The interactive installation "Pockets Full of Memories" is conceived as a digital archive. The audience contributes to the archive by scanning an object in their possession and describing it through a predefined touchscreen questionnaire. The data is stored in a database that is continuously sorted by the Kohonen self-organizing map algorithm that simulates neural-net behavior. It functions in this case by positioning objects from the database in relation to each other in a 2 dimensional matrix according to similarities defined by the contributors' semantic descriptions. The archive of objects is projected large-scale on the walls of the gallery space showing various visualizations such as the objects positioned in the 2D matrix, their movement over time, and textual descriptions. The audience can also interact with the data online to access descriptions of the objects and to contribute extended comments to the objects from anywhere in the world. The project was realized by an interdisciplinary team in Helsinki, Budapest, Stuttgart, Paris and Santa Barbara. (George Legrady)

Comment

"Pockets Full of Memories" is planned to exist in both the real space of a museum or gallery and the internet. It can be considered as a work in a series dealing with the idea of cultural identities, audience contribution and technological processing of information.
The familiar physical objects that visitors are invited to submit to the database are transferred into a digital archive where the objects can be explored as a kind of visually represented personal memories and identities in a three-dimensional interactive space.

"Interactivity is about creating self-consciousness, or consciousness about one's presence." (George Legrady)
