Abstract

Michiel Schwarz is an independent consultant on contemporary technological culture and cultural r&d, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. His diverse projects straddle between the domains of culture, media, design and public policy. From 2001 to 2005 he was council member of the Netherlands’ advisory council for arts, media and culture (Raad voor Cultuur, in Dutch). He has been advisor to the Dutch Secretary of State for Culture and Media on digital/media arts policy, and co-authored the 2003 Raad voor Cultuur, advisory report on eCulture. In the 1990s he co-programmed two editions of the ‘Doors of Perception’ conference, with the Netherlands Design Institute. Among other things, he is currently head of department of ‘Forum‘ at Design Academy Eindhoven.

Biography

Michiel Schwarz holds a PhD in philosophy and sociology of technology from the University of London. His books include De Technologische Cultuur (with Rein Jansma), Divided We Stand – Redefining Technology, Policy and Social Choice (with Michael Thompson), and Speed – Visions of an Accelerated Age (with Jeremy Millar).
