Abstract

Maria Martinez Cañas was born in 1960 in Havana, Cuba, and at three months moved with her family to Puerto Rico as a result of the revolution. She moved to the United States to attend college, and received a BFA from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1982 and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1984. Subsequently, she moved to Miami where she lives and works in the Little Havana section.

Exhibitions / Presentations

She has exhibited extensively in the United States and abroad. Her work is included in numerous major museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum of American Art, Washington, DC, the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and many corporate collections.
