Abstract

The "Virtual Balance" is an interface supporting intuitive navigation through virtual spaces. By shifting the body's weight, the virtual environment can be explored in all directions. The user stands on a platform equipped with sensors that measure the change in the centre of gravity, thereby calculating the positional data for the navigation sequence. The view that the user sees is controlled by his body - shifts of weight to the right/left correspond to directions of movement in the virtual space, while movements forwards and backwards influence the height of the virtual flight. Forward movements cause the user to ascend, so that he can see things from a bird's eye perspective. Backwards movements cause a descent, until the user reaches ground level. The speed of the navigation is dependent on the height of the flight. Movement at ground level corresponds to walking pace, and as the user ascends, the pace quickens.
