Abstract

In this presentation, current V2_Lab projects will serve as an illustration of V2_Lab’s research in the fields of dataset visualisation and access to complex datasets. A key issue in this research is the use of views. User interface designers can combine multiple views with toolsets to create interfaces that resemble desktop applications. The upcoming V2_portal user interface is based on this approach. A different approach is the use of a single, immersive view on an abstract ‘information world’. ‚DataCloud 2.0‘ exemplifies this approach. Topics surrounding both approaches will be addressed.

The V2_portal will offer an extensive set of content and functionalities aimed at the public and professionals in the field of Unstable Media. The V2_Archive database is a key component in the V2_portal. Information and functionalities in the V2_portal will be tied to a specific V2_ ‘domain’. For V2_ as a whole, it is important to make intersections between the different domains, enabling the V2_ audience to find different ‘things’ (events, people, products, artworks) based on a common interest. To address the different needs of
its users, the V2_portal will offer its content and functionality in different views: a ‘functional’ view, a ‘time’ view and a ‘network’ view. Different navigation tools are available: a hierarchical tree, a timeline, a semantic network and a search engine. The V2_portal will keep track of the user’s behaviour and uses the data collected to actively suggest content for the user to explore. The V2_portal features an interactive presentation style that is generated using an extensive set of presentation rules. There are different rules for different types of content and different output formats.

‚DataCloud 2.0‘ is an information space containing a vast collection of media objects. Each media object is of a specific type - image, video, text, 3D model, sound file - and has its own characteristics. These characteristics (meta-data) are used for organizing and querying the information space. Users perceive the entire information space as a ‘cloud’ through which they can ‘fly’ and which they can reorganize as desired. After an examination of their meta-data, objects in the cloud can be viewed and added to personal collections and storylines. Authorized users can add, edit and delete objects. This functionality, combined with a newsgroup facility, makes DataCloud 2.0 an effective information tool that can support a community. The technical framework on which ‚DataCloud 2.0‘ is based will eventually be published as open source software. It can therefore be used by other organizations and for other purposes.
