Abstract
This year’s transmediale is a unique cooperation between the Berliner Kulturveranstaltungs-GmbH, the House of World Cultures and, for the first time, the Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes and its German counterpart, the Goethe-Forum. This cooperation, which we envisage to be a lasting one, enables transmediale to document its status as the biggest international Festival for Media Art in Germany. The competency of the transmediale’s main organiser BKV is joined with the experience of the HKW, whose international and interdisciplinary festivals and events are devoted to the exchange with other cultures, and with the high-quality network of world-wide relationships of the Goethe-Forum. From the onset of this collaboration, it was of particular importance for us to cooperate in developing the content of the transmediale, a programme committed to innovative art practices that cross geographical as well as conceptual borders.
Together we see transmediale as the dynamic vehicle of an emerging international art and culture scene that explores the means, the possibilities and the effects of digitisation. It is therefore both a pleasure and a necessary challenge for us to promote transmediale as a European model articulating this cultural and transformative development. Last year’s much acclaimed Media Art Exhibition will not have an immediate follow-up, due to financial restrictions. However, we are confident that such an important event will, in the future, continue to take place as part and parcel of transmediale.
We are delighted about the increasing cooperation between transmediale and the Berlinale Talent Campus. Both events are committed to the new artistic generations for whom the disciplinary boundaries between film, video, music, performance and internet are dissolving and who are therefore opening up to the world with all available expressive and artistic means.
