netzspannung.org is an Internet platform for artistic production, media projects, and intermedia research. As an interface between media art, media technology and society, it functions as an information pool for artists, designers, computer scientists and cultural scientists. Headed by » Monika Fleischmann and » Wolfgang Strauss, at the » MARS Exploratory Media Lab, interdisciplinary teams of architects, artists, designers, computer scientists, art and media scientists are developing and producing tools and interfaces, artistic projects and events at the interface between art and research. All developments and productions are realised in the context of national and international projects.

Generating, Conveying and Appropriating Knowledge
netzspannung.org is a knowledge space. This means that alongside developing an extensive, up-to-date archive, the focus is on creating different avenues for exploring the media art field. For this purpose netzspannung.org provides services and tools that help users process information more easily and can be used for generating, conveying and appropriating knowledge. The full range of content, services and tools is available to users free of charge.

netzspannung.org as a Content Provider
An overview of media art and research is provided by numerous video documentations of lectures by prominent artists and scholars in the fields of media theory, art research and computer science, along with multimedia presentations of works and projects. In the Learning section, netzspannung.org offers many examples demonstrating how works of media art come into being and how media art can be taught in educational contexts. The competition digital sparks sheds light on teaching at German-language institutes, while the section Media Art Research takes thematic approaches to media art.

netzspannung.org as a Service Provider
netzspannung.org offers various services enabling users to deal actively with the wealth of content.
On the one hand, this means providing different perspectives on and approaches to the content. The Knowledge Discovery Tools, for example, are tools for exploring the netzspannung.org data pools. These tools group content according to chronological or semantic criteria, making it possible to discover new connections between areas of content that are not conveyed by conventional display forms, such as lists.
On the other hand, the platform provides media culture professionals with data entry interfaces enabling them to present their own works, skills and content on netzspannung.org, thereby positioning themselves in a professional context. The projects and profiles they enter in the Community section are included in the Archive, and are thus integrated into the platform's comprehensive search and display options.
For registered users, the netzspannung.org team is working to provide personalized access to the platform. When they log on to netzspannung.org, an "Ariadne's thread" will document their personal path and show which sites they have already visited. They will also be able to save complex search profiles and use them again at a later time.
Also in planning: additional offerings that provide users with personalized access - tailored to their interests - to the content and functionality of the knowledge space netzspannung.org.

The Knowledge Discovery Tools - Timeline and Semantic Map - are being developed such that users can employ them as tools to display content they have compiled themselves.
Tools like these are especially important when the content on netzspannung.org is being used in the context of blended learning concepts. It allows teachers and learners to compile content chronologically and/or thematically according to the demands of the given learning or interest group, and to use it as an online supplement to classroom teaching.
